These days, homeowners are more conscious than ever about how their fueling choice can affect the environment. While you might already be familiar with some of the benefits of Bioheat® fuel — including its eco-friendliness and positive impact on the economy — you may not know as much about newer, higher blends. In this post, we’ll explore how Bioheat® fuel is made and what higher blends mean for you and the environment.

How is Bioheat® fuel made?

Bioheat® fuel is a blend of biodiesel and ultra-low sulfur heating oil. Biodiesel is made from a diverse variety of renewable agricultural by-products, including soybean oil, inedible corn oil, used cooking oil, fats and tallows, canola, and other recycled oils. This makes Bioheat® fuel an eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating oil — and what’s even better, it can be used in your existing home heating system without expensive modifications.

What sets higher blends of Bioheat® fuel apart?

Bioheat® fuel is a climate-friendly solution available right now, offered in three tiers based on how much biodiesel is in the blend:

Blends ranging from 2% to 5% biodiesel (B2–B5) are referred to as Bioheat® fuel. Blends ranging from 5% to 20% biodiesel (B5–B20) are referred to as Bioheat Plus® fuel. Blends with 20% biodiesel and above (B20+) are referred to as Bioheat Super Plus® fuel.

A higher amount of biodiesel in the blend means more renewable agricultural by-products and less ultra-low sulfur heating oil — which translates directly to lower emissions while you heat your home. The industry is rolling out higher blends at a strategic rate to ensure safe operation and equipment compatibility. The long-term roadmap calls for Bioheat® fuel to be carbon-free by 2050.
