Is Bioheat® Fuel Compatible With My Existing Oil Furnace or Boiler?

One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners considering Bioheat® fuel is a simple one: will it work with my existing system? It's a fair question — any time you change something about your fuel, it's reasonable to want reassurance before you commit.

The answer, for the vast majority of Upstate NY homeowners, is an unqualified yes. Bioheat® fuel is specifically engineered to be a drop-in replacement for conventional heating oil. No modifications. No new equipment. No service calls to prepare your system. You switch fuels and the system runs — often better than before.

Here's what you need to know.

Bioheat® fuel is designed as a direct replacement for heating oil

Bioheat® fuel is a blend of ultra-low sulfur heating oil (ULSD) and biodiesel derived from renewable sources like soybean oil, recycled cooking oil, and animal fats. It meets ASTM D396 — the same industry standard specification that conventional heating oil must meet. This means it is chemically and mechanically compatible with every oil-fired heating system on the market, from the oldest cast iron boilers to the newest high-efficiency condensing furnaces.

Oil burner manufacturers including Beckett, Riello, Carlin, and Wayne have all confirmed compatibility with Bioheat® blends up to B20 and higher on newer equipment. Your equipment warranty is not affected by switching to Bioheat® fuel.

It works with oil furnaces, boilers, and water heaters

Whether you heat with an oil-fired forced-air furnace, a hot water boiler, a steam boiler, or a combination system, Bioheat® fuel is compatible. It also works with oil-fired water heaters. The fuel flows through your existing oil lines, nozzles, filters, and burner components without issue.

In fact, biodiesel has natural solvent properties that can actually clean deposits and buildup from fuel lines and tanks that have accumulated over years of conventional oil use. In some cases — particularly in systems that haven't been serviced recently — an initial delivery of Bioheat® fuel may loosen sediment that has settled in the tank. This is why Long Energy recommends scheduling a system tune-up around the time of your first Bioheat® delivery if your equipment hasn't been serviced in more than a year.

What about older systems?

Older oil heating systems — including equipment from the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s — are fully compatible with B5 and B20 Bioheat® blends. The fuel chemistry is close enough to conventional heating oil that legacy equipment handles it without modification.

For very high blends — B50 and above — newer equipment is preferable, as some older rubber seals and gaskets used in older burner components may not be rated for prolonged exposure to high-concentration biodiesel. At the B5 and B20 blends that Long Energy currently delivers, this is not a concern for any standard residential system.

Storage tanks: above-ground and underground

Bioheat® fuel is compatible with standard steel and fiberglass oil storage tanks — both above-ground and underground. There are no special storage requirements at B5 or B20 blend levels. If your tank is in good condition and regularly maintained, your Bioheat® delivery goes in exactly the same way as a conventional oil delivery.

One practical note: because biodiesel's solvent properties can loosen tank sediment (as mentioned above), having your tank inspected and cleaned if it hasn't been done recently is a worthwhile step before your first Bioheat® delivery.
